Tennis players to challenge Celebrate!

Louisville this weekend

Columbus-The Columbus Metropolitan Tennis Organization, the city's gay and lesbian tennis league, has launched another exciting

season.

The beginning of the 1998 season saw a record turnout, with over 80 women and men enrolled in four singles divisions and two doubles divisions.

Three divisions reached maximum enrollment, with one division being

split into two subdivisions. While registration is closed for this year, individuals are encouraged to call the league's voice mail at 614-341-7548 to be placed on the mailing list for the 1999 season.

In addition to organizing the tennis league, the group also sponsors picnics and social

gatherings for its members. Activities this year include the Columbus vs. Louisville Tennis Challenge on Saturday, June 27, beginning at 9 am at Goodale Park.

Following completion of the regular season, the tournament begins in September for all divisions, with all members eligible to participate.

The 1998 season will conclude with a party on Saturday, October 3, from noon to 4 pm at Goodale Park. Regular season and tournament trophies are awarded and prizes are drawn to wrap up the season.

Softball league marks their fifth year with 17 teams

Columbus-The Columbus Lesbian Softball League celebrates their fifth season of slow-pitch softball this year, with 17 teams and nearly 300 women participating. The group plays softball all summer long to strengthen the lesbian community and provide a fun, supportive atmosphere in which to socialize. This year, the group hopes to expand in scope and host a softball tournament for lesbians throughout the state and region.

The 17 all-women's teams are divided into competitive and intermediate divisions, as well as divisions designed to be of a more "recreational nature.” (Translation: No girl-jocks kicking up dust by sliding spikesfirst into home plate.) The teams are sponsored by a variety of community organizations, businesses and professionals.

In addition to the 300 players, the games draw numerous fans who come to watch

every week. Players and managers devote much of their time to practice and playing games, and they represent a wide cross section of the community. League rosters include lesbian and bi attorneys, artists, moth-

ers and civil servants. On any given Sunday, observers can see old and young, big and little, sluggers and sliders, suntanners and cheerleaders.

League play lasts through Labor Day, and culminates in a double elimination round robin tournament. During the season, league participants have cookouts for mingling, sell items for fundraising, and as the summer draws to a close the womon get together one last time to commemorate a successful season at the annual End-of-Season Party.
